  • your new ruler’s first Challenge

**One week left… get your entries in now!

I’m going to try to run this through the second week of August or thereabouts so we can get back on the twice-a-month schedule.
Also, a little preamble. This particular Kween’s passion in life is writing fiction, but I know not all of you are thus inclined (or perhaps you have lives that are more interesting than fiction). Therefore I am considering issuing two challenges at a time: a Truth challenge and a Fiction challenge. You are welcome to do either, or do both.

Right. On to the first challenge(s).

Early August Fiction- Write a short story based on a song.

It doesn’t have to be your favorite song. It can be any song at all. Take some time with this. Listen to the song you’ve chosen a couple of times. Build up a vivid picture in your mind of what’s happening while the song is sung. It could follow a plot based on the lyrics, it could be something that’s going on while the song is playing- anything you like. Make it as long or as short as you please (although if it starts to stretch out, you may want to consider putting a cut in to give your subs’ computers a break).

Early August Truth- So far as I can tell, everyone’s life has at one time or other been changed by music. What I want to know is how. Describe the music- genre, artist, album, one song in particular, whichever it might be- that has significantly impacted your life and tell us what its effect was.

Traditionally there were “rules” to these challenges- they had to be set on public, comments enabled, et cetera, but writing is art and art has no boundaries. Pick a challenge, leave a link to it in the Comments here, and I will link back to anything you have created. And sorry there aren’t little pictures to go along, but I’m not the code expert that the previous Kween was; however, you are welcome to get creative. I look forward to reading your submissions! :)

  • Under New Management

    Dearest Subjects,

I write to tell you that the torch has been passed to a new Kween. While I am a little disappointed to find that this title comes with little in the way of actual gold, I am pleased to be trusted with the reins of this site and what it is associated with.

Briefly, my mission statement: I hope to bring the status of Kween challenges back to what I recall they once were. I can remember this site being as influential and popular as Featured_Grownups once, when Kween’s questions became fodder for top blogs on a regular basis. Maybe this is too ambitious, but I am a young and determined Kween. With the credits accumulated here I hope also to offer some incentive to these challenges; perhaps the best writer in a given month might be rewarded with a little Premium?

But this is just speculation, and I cannot tell yet what the future might hold for this place. Expect the first new challenge in a couple of days, when your Kween will have access to some higher quality internet than she deals with currently.

    Best regards till then,

    your Kween

  • Slow Summer

Who wants to spend their whole summer inside writing? Not me, not me. Well, because I’m lazy (as I’ve mentioned before), I don’t have a topic for you this time. So instead, we’re going to do something a little different. It’s definitely not the first time it’s been done here in Xangaland, though I’m not sure who started it.

You’re going to leave a comment. Next, you’re going to write something nice about the person who commented above you. It can be a poem, a story, a little introduction, whatever you want, as long as it’s something positive. If you don’t happen to know that person, get to know them. Start commenting, send them a message, something, anything. Reach out to your fellow Xanga Babies and appreciate one another.

Once you’ve finished your post about your fellow Xangan, send me a message. Don’t post it in a comment because if you do, you’ll have your name in twice to be written about, you see? There is no deadline as of now. I’ll decide when I see how much interest (if any) this accumulates.

    Aaaand go!

  • Off with their heads!

Okay, not really, but I do have some horrible news!

The Queen has left for the summer, let us all take a moment of silence and remember Tastybaby, the most amazing Xangan there is. Like ever.

If you didn’t know, he is taking a vacation from Xanga. The entire summer, or so I’ve been told. Personally, I’m devastated.

The fact that he asked me, of all people do take over this account, was a total honor, I’ll try and run it as great as he did, though I’m sure I will be nothing in comparison.

I just wanted to give a heads up that there is a Princess taking over while the Queen is away. Though I don’t consider myself a princess, the title just seems to go with the job.  And I’ll do my best, and try to burn this site to the ground.

Any idea’s for a challenge feel free to send a message!

    Since the picture prompts do so well, you can either do a prompt off of this picture;;

Here’s the code for the graphic that links back to the challenge. For a small tutorial on how to make this work, if you would like to use it, click here.

    And/Or.

Write about, if you were granted you three wishes, what would those wishes be? Why? What do you think the possible repercussions might be?
-A modified version of one of silkenbutterfly‘s ideas.

And in memory of the one and only, amazing Tasty,
    Go Xanga babies!

  • Bad Queen

I’m extending this for a week, because I’m too lazy (bad queen) to think of a new one right now. Not that more people would do it or anything.

So I’m horrible at commenting and stuff. I’m having a hard enough time just keeping up with my life, this site, my own blog, and the other site in which I participate. I apologize, but I don’t promise I’m going to get better. I’ll try really hard though?

A couple of people have mentioned they like the picture prompts. I’m going to keep doing them because they’re easy for me. (Selfish queen too.) Sometimes I’ll just post a picture and let you roll with it. Sometimes I’ll give you a choice between a picture and another prompt. Today, you get both again.

    Here is your photo:

    Original image.

By the way, if you have any pictures you think would make good prompts, I’ll definitely use them.

Here’s the code for the graphic that links back to the challenge. For a small tutorial on how to make this work, if you would like to use it, click here.

The second part of the challenge again comes from silkenbutterfly.

If you could go back and correct one mistake you think you’ve made, which would it be? How do you think correcting it would change your life as it is now? Do you think being able to change mistakes would be a good thing?

    You must:

    • Have your entry set to public.
    • Link to either this site or the blog ring.
    • Come back to this site to let me know that you have posted for this challenge. I will then link to your entry. Rec your entry. Leave you eProps. Not promising lengthy comments.
    • Have your entry done by June 15th.
    • Have fun.

Happy writing. Be sure to check out everyone’s entries. I’m sure they appreciate your feedback. Get’m, Xanga babies.

  • Choices

The participation was great last time! Let’s do better this time, shall we? There are two prompts for this challenge. You can either choose one or do both. One is a picture prompt like last time, and the other is a bit more introspective.

Same concept as last time on the picture, and here is your picture for this challenge:

Here’s the code for the graphic that links back to the challenge. For a small tutorial on how to make this work, if you would like to use it, click here.

The second part of the challenge comes from silkenbutterfly.

Write a blog from your perspective 10 years in the future. Where do you live? What has changed? What do you do for a living? What do you do to have fun? Make it sound and feel like a real blog you would write, not just a summary. Draw us into your world.

    You must:

    • Have your entry set to public.
    • Link to either this site or the blog ring.
    • Come back to this site to let me know that you have posted for this challenge. I will then link to your entry. Rec your entry. Leave you eProps. Not promising lengthy comments, from this name anyway.
    • Have your entry done by May 31st.
    • Have fun

Happy writing. Be sure to check out everyone’s entries. I’m sure they appreciate your feedback. Get’m, Xanga babies.

  • Picture Prompt

We’re going to try something a little different this time. I don’t think it could hurt challenge participation. This should be fun and easy. I’m not sure what else I can do to encourage participation here, but I’m willing to try anything you have ideas about, or you could just ignore this completely, like usual.

Here’s how it works. I’m going to provide a picture. From the picture, you’re going to freewrite. Freewriting is one of the best and easiest exercises you can do. It requires about 10 minutes, and is perfect for those suffering from writer’s block. It’s quick, simple. Come on, you can do it. It’s not an exercise in perfection, just put your fingers on the keyboard and let them tap tap tap.

Here’s your prompt and your graphic:

Here’s the code for the graphic that links back to the challenge. For a small tutorial on how to make this work, if you would like to use it, click here.

It should come out looking exactly like the picture above.

You can write a poem, a short story, a song, a journal-type entry, include pictures. It’s entirely up to you. You may take this in whatever direction you would like. Let us see what you can do in about ten minutes.

    You must:

    • Have your entry set to public.
    • Link to either this site or the blog ring.
    • Come back to this site to let me know that you have posted for this challenge. I will then link to your entry. Rec your entry. Leave you eProps. Not promising lengthy comments, from this name anyway.
    • Have your entry done by May 17th.
    • Have fun

Happy freewriting. Be sure to check out everyone’s entries. I’m sure they appreciate your feedback.

  • A drunk man’s words are a sober man’s thoughts…

Hey look, everyone! It’s a new challenge! Get excited!

The turn out at the last challenge was, well, pretty darn pathetic. Such a good challenge, too, if I do say so myself. Anyway, I’m assuming you all must have taken Xangabreaks at the same time, or else were so completely bamboozled by the plethora of April Fool’s jokes that you forgot how to string words together into sentences? It’s ok, really–it happens to the best of us. So this time I trust that you’ll all be chomping at the bit to tackle this next little gem of a challenge. Oh, and here it is!

A drunk man sits next to you in a bar, thinks you’re his buddy, and starts confessing “the truth.” Share about what “the truth” is.

This is a creative writing challenge. You can write a poem, a short story, a song, a journal-type entry, include pictures. It’s entirely up to you. You may take this in whatever direction you would like. However, I’m sure we’ve all felt like drunkenly spilling our darkest secrets at some point in our lives so if you wish to make yours more introspective, feel free. Your deadline is April 30th.

    The Musts:
You must have your entry set to public. You must link to either this site or the blog ring. You must come back to this site to let me know that you have posted for this challenge. I will then link to your entry.

Here’s the code for the graphic that links back to the challenge. For a small tutorial on how to make this work, if you would like to use it, click here.

It should come out looking like this:

Everybody’s doing it! Enjoy! And go read these:

  • If a tree stands alone in the woods…

I’m about to declare this challenge dead, unless anyone has anything else to add. You have until the 13th.

New month. New challenge. No foolin’ you.

From the results of the poll and the feedback generated on the last post, which I most certainly appreciate you taking the time to fill out and comment, I’ve gathered that over half of you would like more introspective challenges. Many of the responders who answered “Other,” suggested that a blendy mix of all three would be nice as well. So that’s what I’ve decided to do. Give you a rotation of types, leaning a bit more towards introspective.

I also received some great future topic ideas from silkenbutterfly, and you will definitely be seeing some of those in the future.

Your next challenge comes from the wacky mind of my boyfriend. I was picking his brain for some ideas. Most were a bit loony, but all are as fun as you make them.

Write from the perspective of the last tree standing in the forest.

This is a creative writing challenge. You can write a poem, a short story, a song, a journal-type entry, include pictures. It’s entirely up to you. • Challenge 2009-3

Spring has sprung! Well, almost… if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere.

Spring is a time for rebirth, new beginnings, and fresh faces. With that, I introduce myself to you. Your most gracious queen, Jeri_Dee, has stepped down from her throne, and I’m going to try my best to hold things down here at Kween_of_the_Queens. Should I tell you who I am, or let you guess? Hm. Interesting. If you ever have any topic suggestions, I’d be more than willing to take them.

On to the topic! There’s a lot of questions here. Feel free to answer one or all of them. Deadline will be the end of March. You can complete it in your own style. If you wish to include pictures you can, however this is a written assignment. Enjoy!

How do the mild days and freshness of spring affect your mood and outlook on life? Does Spring make you hopeful of good things to come? When winter ends and spring begins, do you really notice the transformation of life happening all around you? What do you notice the most?

    The Musts:
You must have your entry set to public. You must link to either this site or the blog ring. You must come back to this site to let me know that you have posted for this challenge. I will then link to your entry.

I’ve been messing around with this. It’s code to add a small graphic and link back to the original topic to your post. Just copy the text in the box and add it to your entry, if you’d like to. (You have to be in your HTML editor when you paste the code, or else it won’t work. To get to that you click the “Edit HTML” check box up in the right hand corner of your Weblog Editor. Here‘s a picture.) I’m like 99.9% sure I did it correctly.

It should come out looking like this:

    Challenge-2009-3

It links back to the topic so you don’t have to add that. Totally optional. I’m not going to make you use that hideous thing, hah. If you like the idea and can make a nicer looking one, by all means, do so!

Enough rambling. Enjoy the topic! Get the word out. Rec. Star. Post things. Sorry about the two time stamps. I’m still figuring out the best time to do it.
